When I was a child, my father in his job as an ornithologist and vertebrate zoologist, would care for injured owls and hawks. Several times we had little screech owls in the house and we'd sometimes let them out to fly around the rooms. They liked to perch on the curtain rods near the ceiling and would bob their heads threateningly at our two dogs

Sometimes they'd even swoop down and bop our collie on her head with their feet- presumably to scare her off. She soon learned not to cross the center of rooms whenever an owl was out. Instead she'd slink around furtively behind the furniture.
